What is Nutritional Therapy?

Nutritional Therapy Practitioners:

  • Use a holistic, whole person approach to health & nutrition, rather than focusing on symptoms in isolation.

  • Are uniquely trained to understand how nutrients and lifestyle factors affect the functions of the body. We consider biochemical individuality. Each individual has different nutrient requirements, needs, lifestyles and preferences, not a ''one size fits all'' approach.

  • Should be registered with the CNHC and BANT, meaning you can be confident they are properly trained, qualified and insured. We must abide by the BANT and CNHC’s code of conduct and keep up to date with scientific evidence through CPD.

‘’Dietary intervention based on knowledge of nutritional requirement, nutritional status and genotype (i.e. personalised nutrition) can be used to prevent, mitigate or cure chronic disease’’ BANT

What is functional medicine and why is this my approach?

Functional medicine uses evolving research in nutritional science, genomics and epigenetics. The current medical model focuses on symptoms and diagnosis in isolation, then medication. It explains what’s wrong but not why. We use detective work to see the bigger picture. We focus on identifying and addressing the root, underlying cause, not just suppressing symptoms. We aim to put the fire out rather than constant fire-fighting. This shifts the traditional disease-centred focus to client-centred systems biology approach to restoring health. Functional medicine evaluates how environmental, emotional, psychological and social factors interact with physiological and biological mechanisms. It allows the body to heal itself as it is designed to do, restoring function and balance to maintain long term health. It is used to prevent or change the outcome of a disease using low-risk and safe interventions. A diagnosis, i.e. depression can be the result of more than one cause, i.e. inflammation. However, one cause, i.e. inflammation can lead to more than one diagnoses, including depression.

‘’Only treatments that address the right cause will have lasting benefit beyond symptom suppression’’ (Institute of Functional Medicine).
