Fees, supplements & testing:

Supplement testing:

Supplements are sometimes recommended to provide nutrients where there may be a dietary gap that is difficult to fill. For example for vegans, for those with a certain higher nutrient requirement, to boost immune function, for those with intolerances/ allergies etc. Supplement programmes are never intended for long term use and must be reviewed regularly. Healthy food is always my first approach. The world of supplements is vast and many may be poor quality or poorly researched. Nutritional therapists are trained to understand their safety and use professional databases to check for drug and nutrient interactions and side effects. I use evidence based research to choose specific dosage, nutrients, ingredients, age and condition specific, from companies using good manufacturing processes. I choose high quality supplements which may cost more than supermarket supplements but are much more effective for quicker results. Budgets will be taken into account.

Functional testing:

Functional testing is not normally available on the NHS and is an additional cost. They can be of significant benefit to pinpoint key imbalances and dysfunction and speed up the process of figuring out what’s wrong. Testing is not essential for IBS, but if symptoms don't resolve and we consider other gut health diagnoses, this is when testing may be more appropriate. Ideally, your GP will run NHS tests in the first instance to diagnose IBS and rule out more serious conditions. Tests such as a comprehensive stool analysis including: parasites, calprotectin, enzymes, fecal fat, microscopic blood in stool, metabolites and immune function. Also tests for food sensitivities or allergies, SIBO breath testing, genetic testing, hormonal and adrenal panels, toxic metals, organic acids and metabolic analysis. Many are non-invasive finger prick tests. If venous blood samples are needed I can arrange this privately. I am able to communicate with your GP to request tests on the NHS.
